The Library Project QAL: February Report

2/21/2014

my first Library Project QAL finish: "Cosmic" mini quilt, 17" x 12"
Thank goodness for planning ahead! Not only did signing up for The Library Project QAL hosted by Adrienne at Chezzetcook Modern Quilts mean I had to plan out a few projects in advance, but it also motivated me to jump right in, which means I've kicked off my miniQuilt Color Study in fine form, found the perfect inspiration for my girls' new birthday quilts, and managed to get a jump on all the quilting far enough ahead of this week's link up that the huge wave of illness sweeping through our house hasn't kept me from meeting my deadline. (But really, it wouldn't be school vacation if everyone in the family wasn't knocked down with coughs and fevers and ear infections, am I right?!) So despite not having enough energy to sew, let alone get out of bed most of the week, I have progress to report!

"Cosmic" is my take on the Arches quilt designed by Jessica Berret of Urban Patchwork from Cathy Gaubert's Pretty in Patchwork: Doll Quilts. I chose this project to kick off the QAL, but also as the entry point for my miniQuilt Color Study (a.k.a. the "pretty up my studio" project : ) I'm planning to work my way through the book as I continue to make my minis!

I used fabric from my stash - mostly Constellations by Lizzy House, with a few other scraps thrown in to work all the way from green to violet.

On the floor next to my cutting table, you can see the selection of plates and bowls I pulled in my search for the right arch to trace for my template... I ended up using my kids' snow saucer! Ironically I needed the biggest circle I could find for this mini.

Minor hiccup: my first ever fabric bleed! This Technicolor print by Emily Herrick ran when I starched it on the ironing board. I suppose this was bound to happen to me eventually since I don't prewash. I'm not sure if I'll change my policy going forward; it was a FQ, and I hate how much fabric you lose to unraveling when prewashing small pieces, so it's unlikely I'll start... maybe I should just always buy full yards instead!

I'm thrilled with how well my very first attempt at curved piecing turned out. And I had so much fun with the quilting. Still not brave enough to FMQ, but these curved and intersecting lines echo the playful improv arches and
were fun to create.

Quick detail of the back -
I primarily used an off white thread to quilt, but I threw a little yellow in the "moon" and along the edges of the "planet rings" - this quilt reminds me of my daughter who is obsessed with all things outer space!

And in keeping with my miniQuilt goal of decorating my walls, there it is! I did sew corners into the back to hang it, but between the four (4!!) snowstorms we've had this week and all of us sick, I haven't had a chance to go purchase a narrow dowel yet.
Modern Basics II: 14 Easy Patchwork Quilt Patterns by Amy Ellis
For the next Library Project QAL link up, I hope to show some piecing progress on the two Improvised Herringbone quilts I'm tackling from Amy Ellis' Modern Basics II: 14 Easy Patchwork Quilt Patterns. When I chose the pattern as a goal, I had no idea what I'd do with it... and then I saw Wee Wander by Sarah Jane! Now I'm excited to combine them and make twin bed quilts for my daughters' spring birthdays. My fabric has arrived. *Fingers crossed* I'm not still on a Nyquil IV next week so I have some energy to get started!

Are you currently participating in any type of QAL? If so, please share in the comments so we can all hear about the fun projects going on. Have you found it to be a great motivator (I definitely have!) or do you find deadlines frustrating?

Also linking up with Lily Pad Quilting's Cabin Fever Party - particularly apropos as I've been stuck in the house with everyone sick all week!

Love your choice of fabrics - the constellation prints look brilliant with this design.

Thank you, Ruth. The design reminded me of space and then I remembered I had this collection in my stash - it worked nicely : )

I love your Cosmic mini! I often starch before I cut and piece. You might catch some of the bleeding before it gets into your project.

Thank you, Tina! And here's the funny thing - I starched all the small pieces, then sewed them, starched seams, then sewed the arch, then starched - it didn't bleed till the third time! I think I used a heaver hand the third time because I wanted the arch really smooth before I cut the next row, but darn it all! lol At least it's a project just for me and not a client.

Love your project and it is all finished and hanging on the wall! Awesome!

Thanks, Linda - I sort of cheated and started off with a mini so I could get some momentum by having a quick finish : )

Arent mini quilts fun, I made one, and can't wait to make more!!

Sarah @ BBD link

Yes, Conni! This is the first I've made and now I'm really excited for the rest of my color study because they'll be fast and fun!

What a great idea to start with a mini-you can check one project off the list. It's adorable and I love the color palette you chose. So sorry to read that your household has been ill. Hope everyone is better soon.

Thank you, RobinSue! I figured I'd gain more momentum if I could check off a finish box early on. And we're on the mend finally - the kids should all be healthy again just in time for vacation to be over : P

I like how your fabric is stored. Neat and tidy, bright and colorful. I would love to do a QAL, but I must concentrate on my current quilt.

I only very recently finished reorganizing my sewing studio, Jill - we'll see my stash still looks half that tidy in another month or so! Thank you, though : )

Thanks for partying with us....wow, I bet you really DO have cabin fever! Hope you are much better soon!

Thank you for hosting the party!! If you live in the northeast, this has truly been the winter of all winters for cabin fever - just left the house today for the first time since Monday : P Crazy!

congratulations on these curvse1 they are awesome;) you are much braver than me, have not tried them yet....

Sarah @ BBD link

Apparently I must think I'm a pro now because the quilt I sketched today has tons of them : P Seriously, though, Adrienne, if you want to try, the mini was the way to go - I figured it wasn't a big investment if it didn't turn out.

I am currently participating in the Barn Door QAL at Sarah Quilts. I am finding the QAL keeps me moving faster than my traditional pace, which is great. It is also SUPER fun to see what others are doing with the same pattern. However, I work outside of my home full time and have kind of a hard time with the deadlines, which makes me feel super guilty. If I can get past the guilt part, I really do enjoy it.

2/24/2014 02:20:16

I've been following Sarah's BDQAL - looks fun! I agree that seeing others' progress on the same quilt at the same time keeps it exciting and gives a healthy dose of motivation. If you're working a job, I give you so many props for keeping up even if you get a tad behind - I'm home full time and I still have a hard time meeting deadlines! Life is busy : )

Ha! I like your solution for preventing colour bleed. :) I use a lingerie bag for washing small cuts of fabric, which seems to help with fraying. Your fabric stash looks delicious, and your mini quilt looks fabulous next to it. Carole, from Fresh off the Frame

Creative, huh? ; ) I just bought two small 1/4 yard pieces this morning and am trying your technique - they're in the washer in my lingerie bag right this second. I'll let you know how it goes!

Nice projects - I love doll quilts and do a monthly swap. :)

A monthly doll quilt swap? That would be so fun! I wish I had time to join every single thing like that out there... someday my kids will be grown and maybe then I will! lol

As I scrolled my first tho't was "cool- it looks like space" and then I noticed the title! I LOVE it!

Sarah @ BBD link
2/26/2014 09:00:01

Thanks, Bobbie! I really like it, too! It was fun and rewarding to work on something small that came together fast and is for me and my learning curve, and not for a deadline or to hand over to someone else : )

So sorry about the fabric bleed. I've gotten away from prewashing except for a few specific colors and so far haven't had any issues.

Sarah @ BBD link
2/26/2014 23:14:16

It was a good live and learn since it was just a project for me - I definitely think I'll be prewashing navy and black from now on, though!
