This week I created the little wonky star that's part of my miniQuilt Color Study. I finished my blue mini last month, and now I have the pink complete. I'm calling it "Abracadabra Audie" after my oldest because she and her sister are always turning each other into all sorts of crazy things with their magic wands. Then yesterday they were playing owl and chipmunk in my sewing room while I worked, so *poof* I managed a story quilt completely by chance! I did just a teeny bit of "quilt rule-breaking" because I wanted light binding on the dark side of the star and dark on the light, so I had to join the binding strips at the corner. But it turned out ok after much fiddling and I achieved the look I was hoping for. ![]() I also tried to finish my "super easy" infinity scarf... but after sewing the sides and flipping it around, I'm stuck on the last seam that requires handsewing. I started, and then a few inches in cut the thread and gave up! My handsewing skills are terrible. I need to revisit this some evening next week with a cup of tea and no rush so I can take my time and use tinier stitches. All in all a good week. One project complete, one started, and all my fabrics for the next two washed and ironed. But better than what I checked off was that I was working in my sewing studio at least thirty minutes a day every day. For me the habit of making time to sew daily is what I most want to cultivate from this experience, so I'm happy that I'm well on my way. (I think it's 21 days that makes a habit? Yes? Just two more weeks to go!) Ok, now it's your turn - how did your first week go as far as finding time daily? What did you work on? 30/30 SEWING CHALLENGE DATES:

If you *really* hate the handsewing you can just sew small stitches with your machine. It won't ruin the scarf and your fabric is so busy that it will hide the stitches. I've done it. Just a thought! That wall hanging is super cute! I had planned to, Jess, but then I realized it would mean the seam would be sewn through both sides and I want to keep it tubular (that's a word, right? it sounds weird). I really shouldn't complain - the scarf was about the easiest thing ever, aside from that darn seam lol. And thank you!

Love your Mini so pretty, good luck with those hand stitches, I'm not so good at them either, that's why you will see all of my binding sewn on the machine. 3/8/2014 02:39:39
Rules are meant to be broken! Love your color study. Thanks for hosting this challenge. I am getting a lot done,

Look at you go! Such a cute little mini for your daughter and her dolly to enjoy! Your scarf is just beautiful, love the AMH print you used. Good luck on the finish. Thank you! My girls' dolls are a bit spoiled - the bunk bed was my mom's as a child and I refinished it two Christmases ago and made quilts (and learned a very valuable lesson about needing a walking foot! hence some of the waviness of the lines). Their bigger dolls also got handmade beds and quilts this year. Meanwhile I don't have a single quilt on my own bed! lol 3/8/2014 14:19:14
Sarah, your mini is beautiful. You did a great job on the binding. Thanks for putting this challenge on. It has been a great motivator Sarah. I've been trying to do something "quilty" every day for about a year. I don't usually set myself up any minimums, just that I need to do it. Of course, I also consider reading blogs, quilting magazines or watching my Craftsy courses as doing something quilty :-) I must say that it has made a difference - but doing a half hour of actual work is even better. 3/8/2014 16:30:20
Thank you for the challenge. That totally counts, Kathleen! I didn't actually sew each day for the challenge - when I say "working in my studio," I'm counting fabric pulls, ironing, cutting - all of it : ) It's just the idea that we get to be in our sewing rooms working on our own pet projects instead of rushing a deadline for someone else. Enjoy! 3/9/2014 01:10:30
What a sweet mini! It looks right at home! You and your girls sure share a wonderful talent using your imagination for story telling. I don't recall ever seeing a link to the rules about binding.... But glad to see you went with your vision. The binding is perfect! And your scarf is beautiful! Hahaha Lorna - I think it's advised against because of wear? That it would pull apart at a corner? But this one was a wall hanging, so no worries. I can see why it would be a bad idea for a big quilt that gets a lot of use and washing. My kids were playing that game and I said, "Make sure your sister doesn't eat you," to the younger one and the older one replied, "Mom, owls don't eat chipmunks!" Sure.... 3/9/2014 14:13:31
Love your project and the colors of your quilt! Great job! Enjoying the challenge! Comments are closed.
